The year is 2007. The game is "The World." "The World" is a massive multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG). The victim is a young player named Tsukasa.
In the real world, a young girl falls into a coma at her computer. At the same time, "The World" player Tsukasa wakes up with no memories of anything. He attempts to log out of the game, but fails. Meeting another player named Mimiru, he is told to just reset his computer. But there's a slight problem. He's not sitting at a computer. In fact...to Tsukasa, "The World" is just as real as the real world outside the game. Tsukasa can feel, smell, and touch everything in the game as if it were reality.
During one of his aimless wanderings, Tsukasa meets a cat player character named Maha. He is bestowed with the power to call on a great golden, barbell shaped gaurdian if he ever needs protecting, and with Maha by his his side Tsukasa is unbeatable in "The World."
But what Tsukasa wants most is to be able to log out. He meets several other players, who all seem interested in his case. One of which, Bear, thinks that Tsukasa may be related to the legendary Key of the Twilight. And so the adventure begins.

Characters
Tsukasa
Japanese seiyuu: Saiga Mitsuki
Wavemaster
Tsukasa woke up in "The World" with no memories of anything. He cannot log out. He has a guardian that knocks players unconcious in the real world. Could he possibly be linked to the legendary Key of the Twilight? The rumored special item that lies within the game? Tsukasa's only friend at the beginning is a strange cat player character named Maha.
Mimiru
Japanese seiyuu: Toyoguchi Megumi
Heavy Blade
Mimiru is the first person Tsukasa talks to. She's very energetic, and at first says she hates Tsukasa. Over time they become close friends, and she says she'll do anything to protect him. Mimiru and Bear are always together, and if Bear isn't around, he's probably on his way.
Bear
Japanese seiyuu: Nakata Kazuhiro
Blademaster
Bear is extremely intelligent. He knows how to use his resources wisely. For some odd reason, he's always hanging around Mimiru. Although we never quite learn what Bear does, there are hints that hes at least in his 40's age wise. He has a son who's always asking him for money, but other than that little is known about Bear.
Lady Subaru
Japanese seiyuu: Nazuka Kaori
Heavy Axe
In the real world Lady Subaru is in a wheelchair. "The World" lets her walk freely again. She is the head of the Crimson Knights, a group of players that try to keep harmony in "The World." Subaru quickly befriends Tsukasa and says she wants to meet him in the real world when he is finally able to log out.
Crim
Japanese seiyuu: NA
Long Arm
Ex-Crimson Knight, though he never does say why he left. Crim is the one who got Subaru well on her way to being the confident player she is. He's the one that encoruaged her to not take crap from other players, and to be her own person. Crim is often found talking to B.T. about some plot of theirs to try and find the Key of the Twilight.
B.T.
Japanese seiyuu: Hiramatsu Akiko
Wavemaster
Like Crim, B.T. really wants the Key of the Twilight. Even though she doesn't know what it is, she wants it still. She's good for giving Bear information, but other than that just wants the treasure.
Sora
Japanese seiyuu: Yanaka Hiroshi
Twin Blade
Sora is nothing but trouble. All he does is go around killing people if they don't give up their member address. He's killed B.T. more than once. Sora boasts about being the strongest, and then tries to prove it with sneaky manuveres.
Maha
Cat Player Character
Very little is known about Maha. We know she is deeply involved in the inner workings of the game. She talks only to Tsukasa, and does so silently. You never hear Maha's voice, and its unknown if she actually has one, or just has some telepathic link with Tsukasa.
Aura
???
Even less is known about Aura than is known about Maha. She floats over a little bed seemingly asleep, while Tsukasa sits by her side waiting for her to "wake up."
